CIO's work in 2015–16 focused on support. We chose these beautiful photos of lichen, which are an essential building block for Ontario's ecosystem, to represent the idea of CIO's support of its members in this year's annual report.

Camping In OntarioCamping In Ontario (CIO) is a not-for-profit organization that has represented privately-owned and -operated campgrounds in the province of Ontario, Canada for over 40 years. CIO is a major resource for people looking for a campground vacation in the province.
Every year CIO publishes an extensive directory of their members' campgrounds. In the six years that we have been designing the directory, we have made many improvements. We created an appealing colour scheme to define the camping regions in the province and make them easy to find. We selected compact yet highly readable fonts to keep the page count as low as possible and the printing costs down. We developed a digital method to automatically generate regional maps with the locations of CIO members' campgrounds. Last year we developed an automated way to publish the directory as an e-book, which has provided new advertising opportunities for CIO and more exposure for their members. This year we designed clearer icons for the campground facilities.

The identity we developed for CIO benefits their members by providing a warm and inviting face for the private campground industry in Ontario. The idea of roasting marshmallows over an open fire encapsulates all that is memorable about camping. That’s why we used this image as a key element of their visual identity which includes a logo, stationery, newsletters, posters, advertisements and a supplier guide. We have been working with CIO for over six years maintaining their identity and producing new materials on an ongoing basis.
According to Executive Director, Alexandra Anderson, the Camping In Ontario Board of Directors loved their business cards so much that they started trading them like hockey cards.

TIAO is a new umbrella association for tourism organizations serving Ontario, Canada’s diverse tourism industry.
TIAO collectively represents 147,000 businesses and 600,000 employees that are dedicated to promoting and operating Ontario’s tourism industry.
We developed a logo for this new organization using a red arch to represent it’s role in bringing together diverse organizations under one industry association. We extended the red arch into a selection of photographs of some of Ontario’s key tourist attractions that we used on TIAO’s business cards, letterhead and website.
Always sensitive to the need to reduce costs for our not-for-profit clients we chose a two colour scheme, black and a bold red, which helps TIAO reduce printing costs while maintaining a strong visual identity.

Tourism Industry Association of OntarioTIAO is a new umbrella association for tourism organizations serving the diverse tourism industry of the Canadian province of Ontario.
The title of their first annual report was “Your Voice”. We designed the report using punctuation marks to represent that voice. We also used the two colour palette of the visual identity we developed for them to promote strong brand recognition for this new organization.
We helped TIAO to reduce their costs by suggesting the distribution of enhanced PDFs as opposed to printed reports.

MomijiFounded in 1978 by volunteers, the Momiji Health Care Society is a not-for-profit organization that offers assisted living and a wide range of community programs for seniors from Japanese-Canadian and other cultural backgrounds.
Momiji was concerned that it was primarily viewed as a senior’s residence but wanted to let the community know of the many other services they offered. We designed this brochure and supplied copy writing services for Momiji to promote their many other services. The brochure serves as the foundation of a new visual identity for the organization.
Momiji means maple in Japanese and maples are at their most beautiful in the fall. This metaphor for the autumn of one’s life is at the core of Momiji’s philosophy so we used Canadian and Japanese maple leaf silhouettes in brilliant colours throughout the brochure.
The design was very well received by their board of directors and is being used as the template for a series of new brochures detailing Momiji’s services.
The brochures have arrived, right on schedule … and they look wonderful!

ETM is a charity developed for youth, by youth. Their mission is to address the issues faced by young people at risk, including homelessness, juvenile delinquency, prostitution, substance abuse and violence. ETM provides an opportunity for personal development through job-skills training and employment assistance in a structured setting that promotes self-esteem, creativity and team-building among participants.
It was very important to ETM to create an identity that would appeal to the youth they are working with as well as to the corporate audience they want to attract as sponsors and partners. We designed their logo and stationery package with a contemporary yet corporate feel.
I love them! They’re perfect — clean, but still funky, young and creative with the die cut element and the business cards are great as well.

FiftyPFiftyP is an organization helping children to develop a healthy relationship with money, including sharing with others. Their website helps children to learn how to save, spend and share their earnings. The name FiftyP comes from a new model of profit sharing, which involves the company donating 50% of their profit to charitable organizations. Each month FiftyP donates to charity, with the participating kids deciding where the money should go.
The challenge with designing the FiftyP logo was to convey a complicated idea in a child-friendly way that would also appeal to parents. We used a percentage sign in the logotype to indicate that FiftyP refers to percentages, not the over-fifty age group. The “i” in the form of a child makes the logo playful, especially with the bright colour scheme.

The Junction Arts Festival- Exhibition catalogue

- Exhibition catalogue
We worked with curator Carmen Victor to develop this catalogue for the thirteenth annual Junction Arts Festival. The Junction Arts Festival is North America’s largest “art meets street” event. The title of the exhibition, “Many Fires”, was based on a quote from Jane Jacobs’ seminal book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, which metaphorically compares the diversity of a city to a field in which many fires are burning. We sourced an aerial photograph of the Junction neighbourhood for the cover image and created an abstract illustration of a bonfire. There was a very limited budget so we printed the catalogue using only black and yellow which was not only striking but allowed us to create a multiple-page catalogue within the budgetary constraints.
Everyone loves the catalogue!
